Traineeships offer paid employment in NT Government agencies whilst you complete a nationally recognised qualification.
A traineeship is a great way to start your career in the NT Government. Traineeships run from 1 to 2 years.
The NT Government has 2 traineeship offerings:
- School students: Senior students completing their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training are placed in agencies part time whilst they complete their studies.
- Adults: Full-time or part-time traineeships are available in a range of different areas.
Pending eligibility, participants are proudly supported by Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (DITT), User Choice Funding.
You will receive
- Annual salary range $20,048 to $42,260.
- 12 to 36 months employment.
- Nationally recognised qualification completed through a registered training organisation.
- Hands on work experience in a government department with opportunities for rotations.
- Mentoring and support.
- Personal and professional development.
- Access to NT Government employment conditions including leave provisions, and superannuation contributions.
After successful completion, you will have an opportunity to undertake a subsequent traineeship for a higher level qualification or employment with the NT Government.

There are 2 yearly traineeship commencements:
- July: Adult traineeship program.
- February: School based and adult traineeship programs.

Who can apply
- Adults wanting to re-engage into the workforce or commence new career path.
- Recent school leavers (over 15 years old).
- Senior school students (years 10 to 12).
- Australian citizen/resident or visa holder with Australian appropriate working rights or visa to state working rights in Australia.
Note - to be eligible you must not hold the same or higher level qualification than what is being completed in the traineeship.
